Jim Volling has handled the defense of white-collar criminal cases since 1981. He has represented both individual and institutional defendants and witnesses in federal criminal cases alleging misapplication of bank funds, securities fraud, mail fraud, wire fraud, false statements in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1001, Medicare and Medicaid fraud, bank fraud, HUD program fraud, agricultural program fraud, defense contractor fraud, as well as violation of currency transaction reporting laws, antitrust laws, export laws, customs laws, environmental laws, and the Hobbs Act. In addition, he has been involved in numerous state criminal cases involving allegations of fraud and environmental law violations.
Since beginning his practice, Jim has represented many witnesses before both federal and state grand juries in the District of Columbia and several states, including Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, and Arizona. Jim has negotiated immunity grants for clients and represented both targets and non-targets in numerous grand jury matters. Jim’s clients have included individuals, large corporations, financial institutions, nonprofit entities, and smaller businesses.
Apart from criminal investigations and cases, Jim has also conducted internal investigations of suspected criminal conduct for corporations and other institutions. Those investigations have focused on potential allegations of banking law violations, election law violations, government contract and tax fraud, mail and wire fraud, securities fraud, Hobbs Act violations, customs law violations, and antitrust law violations. In conducting such internal inquiries, Jim has worked closely with in-house counsel, as well as with internal auditors and outside accounting professionals.

Jim Volling is one of the most respected commercial litigators in the Midwest. He is the former head of the firm's business litigation group and served as a judicial clerk under the Honorable Warren E. Burger, Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court and the Honorable Roger Robb, United States Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia Circuit. For more than two decades, he has represented business clients in a wide variety of complex commercial disputes and represented individuals and institutions in white-collar criminal matters and investigations.
Jim has appeared in state and federal trial courts in every region of the country, and he has argued appeals in several federal and state appellate courts. He has handled disputes valued up to several hundred million dollars.
His broad-based experience includes extensive work in antitrust, securities and shareholder litigation, consumer class actions, False Claims Act, RICO, lender liability, breach of contract, breach of warranty, and lender liability. In the area of white collar criminal defense, he has handled federal and state cases alleging misapplication of bank funds, securities fraud, mail fraud, wire fraud, bank fraud, government program fraud, and violations of laws involving antitrust, export, customs, environmental issues, and the Hobbs Act. He has also handled internal investigations of suspected criminal conduct for corporations and other institutions.
